Her closest relationship is undoubtedly with her father. Following the death of her mother at age nine, Luna was raised by her father alone. As an only child, father and child are incredibly close; they also share his unusual beliefs, hobbies and habits. While these cause conflict with the students at Hogwarts, Luna upholds her beliefs throughout her stay at the wizarding school. In Deathly Hallows, the Death Eaters recognise this indestructible link between father and child and abduct Luna, in order to blackmail and control Xenophilius. Luna's abduction changed Xenophilius' mindset; he transforms The Quibbler into an anti-Potter publication, and tries to turn the Trio into the Dark Art-controlled Ministry.

She also has a unique and close relationship with Harry Potter. Although he intially finds her to be rather odd, their ongoing relationship acts as a comforting barrier between those with unpleasant sentiments towards him and his true friends. The two of them are effectively outcasts; unique in the fact that they are seen as the 'untouchables' of Hogwarts. Luna is there for Harry following the death of his godfather, Sirius Black; her unwavering belief in an afterlife provides comfort for Harry.

Her relationship with the other two members of the Trio is different from Harry's relationship. Hermione and Luna initially do not see eye-to-eye, but following their many experiences together, especially through their Dumbledore's Army sessions, they become friends. The same can be seen in Luna's relationship with Ron Weasley, who at first is very distant and not particularly interested in knowing her. Being one of the only people to volunteer to help the Trio in their time of need, Luna and Ron share a unique friendship, with Ron still lightly teasing her beliefs and her unusual behaviour. Harry, Ron and Hermione feature as portraits in Luna's room, a testament to her opinion on their friendships.
